Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam (University for Women) was founded in the year 1983 by Sri N. T. Rama Rao garu, the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, with the fervent desire to train women students as better builders of the Nation and to inculcate skills of leadership in all aspects of life. The University was established under the Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam Act of 1983, which has come into force on the 14th of April 1983.
It was started with nine faculties and 144 students and twenty staff members including non-teaching. Today the University has a student population nearly 5300 and an academic staff of 97 and 112 academic consultants. Currently, the University has 51 courses at both post-graduate and undergraduate level with a good component of research. The campus of Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam is spread out in a lush green area of 130.12 acres. The University is situated at a distance of 3 km from the railway and bus stations of Tirupati. The campus has the necessary buildings to run its academic programmes and administrative machinery. There are separate buildings for Humanities and Sciences, University Administration, Central Library, University Auditorium, Sericulture Complex, Law and School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Also an independent building for Computer Science, Business Management and Engineering College.
The University functions across four Schools viz., School of Sciences, School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Management, School of Nursing and School of Engineering and Technology. The International twinning programmes offered in the campus are Indo-Sweden B.Tech. degree, Music and Dance programmes in collaboration with TANA, Suswara and Ragavahini music academies, U.S.A & Vidya Sangeetham of Singapore.
The University is enriched with the funds received from the UGC and State Government. It has to its credits many multidisciplinary research projects funded by R & D agencies like UGC, DST, DBT, ICSSR, ICMR, CSIR etc.,. Strong Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship Ecosystem with 4 Incubators namely; Technology Business Incubator (TBI) by DST, Women Biotechnology Incubation Faculty (WBIF) by DBT, Livelihood Business Incubator (LBI) by Ministry of MSME, GoI, Food Processing Incubator by Ministry of Food Technology, GoI and TOCIC – TePP outreach cum cluster Innovation Centre by DSIR Prism are added credits to the University. Recently, the University has been granted Rupees Hundred Crore under PM-USHA for Infrastructure and research. It also has linkages with foreign Universities and national organizations of UK, Canada for staff development and women Entrepreneurship development.
The University has strong governance with 13-Member Executive Council, headed by Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. V. Uma and Prof. N. Rajani, is the Member Secretary of Executive Council and the Registrar.
The alumnae of the University are highly placed in various profession within and outside the country fulfilling the very moto “Gnanam Nirmochanam Streenam” of the University. The University is accredited with “Grade A+” by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and International Certificate ISO.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
As Constituent department of University, the Department of Law was established in the year 1988. The department has been offering 3 years and 5 years L.L.B, L.L.M (P.G) Programmes and Ph.D. Programme. The Department is acclaimed as the leader in the field of Legal Education to women in the state for over 30 years. Legal education offered by the department is designed to give Professional orientation besides promoting skills of advocacy and legal drafting. The students in the department are trained in such a way, where they are considered as an ideal professional, whom the society looks up to.
It is a great pride and honour to place on record that the alumnae and the students of SPMVV are always much chosen and most preferred in their selected professions in the society. The SPMVV alumnae are highly placed in the respective professions of the society accomplishing the very Vision and Mission of this University.
