About Us

Andhra University stands as one of India's oldest and most prestigious educational institutions. Established in 1926 under the Madras Act, it was the first residential, teaching-cum-affiliating university dedicated to postgraduate education and research. The university holds a special place in the hearts of the people, as it was founded after a long struggle by the Telugu elite to bring higher education to the northern Circars and Ceded districts of the erstwhile Madras Presidency.

The institution’s first Vice-Chancellor, Sir C.R. Reddy, laid the foundation for its enduring success. In 1931, former President of India Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan succeeded him as Vice-Chancellor. The University College of Arts was inaugurated the same year, offering courses in Telugu language and literature, History, Economics, and Politics. A year later, the College of Science and Technology introduced Honours programs in Physics and Chemistry, pioneering new courses in Science, Arts, Management, and Engineering.

Guided by a vision of academic excellence, Andhra University has attracted renowned scholars such as Dr. T.R. Seshadri, Dr. S. Bhagavantham, Professor Hiren Mukherjee, Professor Humayan Kabir, and Dr. V.K.R.V. Rao. Nobel Laureate C.V. Raman and globally acclaimed statistician Padma Vibhushan Prof. C.R. Rao are among its distinguished alumni.

Continuously evolving to meet global demands, the university has introduced several contemporary courses under the leadership of its successive Vice-Chancellors. Since its inception, it has remained committed to fulfilling the educational needs of the region, addressing sociological challenges, and fostering leadership, community development, and responsible citizenship.

As part of its commitment to quality education, Andhra University has undergone rigorous self-evaluation and accreditation processes. In 2006, it became India’s first general university to receive ISO 9001:2000 certification. By 2024, it ranked 7th rank in the state public university category, 25th in the university category and 41th overall by NIRF. Andhra University achieved an A++ grade from NAAC with a 3.74 CGPA, placing it among the top universities in India, including IITs and IIMs.
